michaelv@iastate.edu (Michael L. VanLoon) writes:
Actually, from what I can gather, the only one not coordinating is
Bill Jolitz himself, [...]
This is exactly how I see it, too.
a) The most stable, bugfree, production quality release possible in
a free unix, [...]
I don't know whether that's possible, but we're trying to make it as
stable and reliable as we can, within our knowledge of the PC lossage,
er, architecture.
b) As complete as possible compliance with 4.3BSD and Net/2, [...]
There are several compatibility issues we[*] are concerned with:
1) Compatibility with previous versions of NetBSD. We do not want to
gratuitously screw over users. The DB library changes in 0.9 were
because the old library was broken and out-of-date. Had we stuck with
that version, we would have had to duplicate much of the work done by
the 4.4BSD people on it. This would be a waste of effort.
2) Compatibility with 4.4BSD and other versions of Unix on the 386.
Ultimately, everyone benefits if they can run other people's
executables. In particular, in the not-too-distant future we will be
able to run vendors' executables, and thereby inherit commercial
software support. We currently run 386BSD(/FreeBSD/NetBSD 0.8) and
BSDI executables on the 386, modulo problems with differing DB
libraries.
3) Compatibility with other ports of NetBSD running on similar
hardware. I will be working to make all of the 68k ports binary
compatible, and to make them all support the SunOS compatibility mode,
and the HP/UX compatibility mode where possible (when the former is
implemented and when I finish the latter).
4) Compatibility with POSIX, ANSI, and XPG3. No comment.
[*] I'm sure there are people in the NetBSD group who disagree with
some or even all of these.
Buildable on as many architectures as possible [...]
Perhaps not as many as possible, but at least as many as we care
about. B-) Ports from people outside the `core' NetBSD group are
also welcome; the Mac, Amiga, and DECstation ports are in this
category (though the first two borrow heavily from the hp300 port),
and most of the code in the hp300 and SPARC ports are from 4.4BSD
contributors.
[Re: Linux] Until recently, its networking was not at all
complete. They have recently adopted Net/2, but it is still
somewhat buggy.
Apparently, Linux's `Net-2' is not `Berkeley Networking 2', but merely
the second release of Linux's own networking code. It was the poor
networking, buggy file systems, and general instability that
encouraged me to change from Linux to 386BSD about 10 months ago. It
has probably gotten better since then, but I have not had those
problems with 386BSD or now with NetBSD.

Yup. The Viper works with Linux. The problem is that XFree86 doesn't.
THe only thing I've gotten it to do is 800x600 in monochrome.
So if you want to do X, you're pretty much hosed.

There is various software out there that allows faxing. Try flexfax and
mgetty among others.

It's theoretically possible, but difficult to do. The code to change
video modes varies too much from card to card; putting it all in the
kernel would result in too much bloat.

I've recently installed a Data Technology Corporation SCSI card
and two 320-megabyte disks.
If I leave out my existing IDE disks, both OS/2 and MS-DOS can see
the disks without the need for drivers. But Linux fails to see
the drives.
So, do I need another kernel? A magic entry in my mount list?

Reply-To: bf703@cleveland.Freenet.Edu (Patrick J. Volkerding)
There have been a few more updates to the Slackware 1.0.2 Linux
distribution. Hopefully, things will be stable for a while now.
If you're happy with what you have, you don't need to upgrade.
Here are the new features:
The bootutils-1.0 package is now a standard part of the Slackware
distribution. This package does automatic filesystem checking of all
unchecked filesystems when you boot, greatly increasing resistance to
file corruption.
Additionally, gzip and tar were updated to the most current versions.
These are 1.2.4 and 1.11.2, respectively.
The games series has been changed from 'G' to 'Y' to avoid a conflict
with an existing disk series for German users. Also, it now contains the
full set of BSD games. Thanks goes to Curtis Olson and Andy Tefft, who put
the collection together.
These changes are documented in /pub/linux/slackware/ChangeLog on
ftp.cdrom.com.

LINUX HARDWARE COMPATIBLITY LIST
VERSION: 0.6 DATE: 01 Aug 93
Note: This list was originally posted by who-knows? I don't remember, and
I haven't seen it in a while, so I'll take the responsibility of maintaining
this list. Please send your hardware (in)compatibility lists to erc@apple.com.
PLEASE put the word "HARDWARE" in your subject line IN CAPS!
================================= cut here ===================================
Welcome to the Linux Hardware Compatibility List. It is my hope that
this will be of help to people and that it will do away with a lot of the
"Will XXX work with my System?" questions. I also hope that this will help
people who want to buy a system to run Linux or are in the process of
upgrading their system and want to make sure that the hardware they buy is
compatible with Linux (especially for item's such as SCSI controller's and
CD-ROM's, and video cards for X).
Please be aware that the list NO LONGER contains X hardware
specifics. These will be posted as a seperate listing.(along with
clocks, settings, etc.)
People who have emailed me (erc@apple.com) about specific pieces
of hardware that they've gotten to work have their name and email address
printed alongside. This is to help others who are having difficulty get
help directly from the guilty party. ;)
If you are wondering about a specific piece of Hardware and you don't
find it in this list all I can say is I don't know at this time but as soon
as I find out it will be in the next list. If you find out that it work's
from some other source, i.e. a friend or trying it out, PLEASE let me know.
Also even though a piece of equipment is on this system doesn't mean that I
know how to get it to work with Linux, it is on this list because someone
has told me that it works on THEIR system. So if it is on the list and
you can't make it work, it sounds like a good time to, in order, do:
1) read ALL the faq's
2) read comp.os.linux, and scan the subjects for your XXX
3) email the person listed here who says it works (if any)
3) post AFTER READING comp.os.linux and c.o.l.announce.
Thanks to everyone that has helped and sent info this list,it is a lot
better because of their help!

INCOMPATIBILITIES
=================
From: mow@marsu.tynet.sub.org
The ProAudio Spectrum 16 does not work properly in combination
with the Adaptec 1542B. This is due to both card's busmastering
feature. NeXTSTEP/Intel even crashes with this configuration.

I was wondering if anybody here knew of a BBS package that has been ported
to Linux. I found Eagle BBS, but it would require a couple hours of
porting work to get up and running. I am looking for something that would
be like a mess-dos setup, but allow higher level users to get to the shell.
