|

Given the similarity in appearence and name between

/etc/termcap and /etc/printcap one could be forgiven for
|
|
assuming that they contain analogous infomation. This is not
|
|
the case. Whereas termcap contains informations about terminal
|
|
*types* - (mostly escape seqences) printcap contains
|
|
information about *specific* printers (like the directory that
|
|
holds the spool queue and the device name of the printer). The
|
|
information about a printer model's escape sequences and so on
|
|
are held in the various filters which are programs called by
|
|
lpd to drive the printer. /etc/printcap simply gives the
|
|
locations of these filters. For details RTFM(printcap). [
|
|
Alternatively the net-HOWTO has a summary of some of the more
|
|
important fields. ]

Yes. Works just fine too. Actually, I had an easier time setting up

|
a linux box and hooking it into the net and getting httpd working
|
|
than I did getting Mosaic and TCP/IP for Windoze for Workgroups working.
|

Check out sunsite in the /pub/Linux/system/Network/info-servers
|
|
directory. There's a pre-built httpd daemon there.

I just installed a pair of internal BOCA V.FAST 28,800 bps modems into 2
|
|
Linux systems. I have the line speed set to 38400 on both ends (stty
|
|
confirms speed) and Zmodem works great with text files (3800 bps).
|
|
However, when I try to transfer a compressed file, I get lots of errors
|
|
and the transfer aborts. I know that the modem can't actually handle data
|
|
that is already compressed at that high a speed, but shouldn't flow
|
|
control prevent over running the chip's FIFO ? If I reduce the speed to
|
|
19,200, the compressed files transfer fine, but less than half the speed
|
|
(1800 bps). I'd be really happy if the compressed files would transfer at
|
|
a higher speed. Anyone have any ideas ?
|
|
|
|
BTW: I have the same problem when using DOS/Telix on the receiving end.

A friend of mine justed landed me a IBM HD-Drive to check.

I've connected it to my PAS16 scsi port, and rebooted,

This will give you the man apges printed out without the funky control

Look in the /etc/inetd.conf file. There should be a line looking like:

|
finger stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/sbin/tcpd in.fingerd -w
|
|
|
|
Replace the in.fingerd -w with a shell script or something that prints
|
|
out the information you want. You can take out the /usr/sbin/tcpd
|
|
too, but that introduces more security risks, and if yr going to close off
|
|
finger, you'll want that security then.

I'm using gs with a DeskJet 560c, but the options (with the
|
|
exception of the -sDEVICE shoudl be the same. Mine is hooked
|
|
through a lpr filter, here is the exact file:
|
|
|
|
gs -q -dSAFER -sDEVICE=cdj550 -dNOPAUSE -sOutputFile=- -
|
|
|
|
I think that the important thing is to supress the dialog
|
|
messages that gs prints to stdout/errout during processing.
|
|
|
|

The IBM TCP/IP for DOS product with the NFS option should work fine
|
|
to provide NFS client support (or server).
|
|
I use the base product but haven't had a reason to try the NFS option.
|
|
You may find this slightly less pricy than some of the commercial
|
|
competition -- certainly less then Netmanage's Chameleon/NFS which only
|
|
works for windows programs (not even DOS box under windows Grrrrr!).

The first connection would take some time to startup inetd,

And the innd could be set to timeout and exit after a period

of inactivity.

Two weeks ago i send the following message, but i get no responce.

So I post it again and hope someone can answer me:

Can someone help me ? I want to use my Colorado streamer DJ-10 with
|
|
controller card FC-10 on my Linux system ! I get the patched ftape-driver
|
|
from sunsite and compiled it successfully. The modules were compiled same
|
|
and I'am using kernel version 1.1.49.
|
|
|
|
Now when I give the command "mt -f /dev/ftape reten " the tape go's from the
|
|
beginning to the end and return. That is it what the tape should do, but
|
|
when I want to read from the tape with:
|
|
|
|
mt -f /dev/ftape erase
|
|
|
|
or
|
|
|
|
mt -f /dev/ftape status
|
|
|
|
the tape moves and I get the message: I/O error !
|
|
|
|

Thanks! I'm going to get mgetty+sendfax software, and I excluded
|
|
modem from this effect. I know the modem sends fax OK. Then I took
|
|
the g3 file efax06a prepared for sending and processed it with my
|
|
copy of g3topbm.
|
|
|
|
The ugly effect was reproduced without involving the modem!
|
|
Let's see: g3topbm or xview is nasty?
|

Hello!

I am trying to make Minicom availiable to a user on my system and I am
|
|
having problems. He cannot access the program if he does not have root
|
|
access (UID 0) because he cannot access the minicom.dfl file...
|
|
|
|
So my question is two-fold:
|
|
1. Where are the Minicom configuration files stored.
|
|
e.g. minicom.dfl, etc.
|
|
|
|
2. Can a user access Minicom without root access?
|
|
NOTE: he can run the program but it says that he
|
|
does not have sufficient rights to run the
|
|
minicom.dlf file.
|
|
|

I have access to a workstation which is connected to network A. I want to set

up a small linux pc ethernet, with each PC having a local address, but also
|
|
being able to access network A via the workstation. The workstation has its
|
|
own IP address on network A. (and uses ethernet)

Q1. Is this possible?

Q2. If so, how?
